Introduction to Clinical Education





Day 1
Introduction to clinical education
At the end of this workshop, you should:
- understand the philosophy behind physiotherapy education as promoted by the World Physiotherapist Education Framework and Guideline on Clinical Education
- be aware of the requisite standard of an international, structured, contemporary, certified, clinical education program in physiotherapy seeking program accreditation
- understand the factors affecting, and barriers to delivery of a clinical education program
- comprehend a standardised assessment tool for evaluation of student performance in clinical education
- understand the characteristics and core skill of a successful physiotherapy clinical educators
- understand how to provide feedback to facilitate learning
- be aware of possible approaches to the management challenging students
Role of the clinical educator
At the end of this talk, you should be able to:
- understand the contemporary role of a clinical educator
- consider different strategies to support students while they are learning
- set learning goals and objectives with the students
- be aware of questioning techniques which facilitate learning
- recognise the principle of assessment of student performance
The core skill set of a physiotherapy clinical educator
At the end of this talk, you should:
- understand the core clinical education skill set of a physiotherapy clinical educator
- recognise the strategies for group discussion
- recognise questioning techniques that facilitate Learning, Clinical reasoning and Reflective practice
Putting theory into practice- an activity session
Using the case scenarios provided, work in small groups to:
- identify the essential learning points you consider appropriate for education of a physiotherapy student during their clinical placement under your supervision
- role play feasible questions that facilitate a student’s
- clinical reasoning
- reflective practice
- self-directed learning
Assessment of student performance during clinical placement
At the end of this session, you will be:
- familiar with the Assessment of Physiotherapy Practice (APP) tool
- able to recognise how the APP tool can facilitate learning
- able to score a student’s performance using the APP tool
Day 2
Introduction to feedback literacy and the importance of student learning
At the end of this talk, you should be:
- acquainted with the characteristics of an effective clinical education
- able to recognise the importance of providing feedback to students
- aware of the various feedback models published in the literature
- able to understand the various barriers to effective feedback delivery
- conscious of some delivery hints for effective feedback
Preparing for a feedback session
At the end of this talk, you should be able to:
- recognise the steps involved in preparing a feedback session
- comprehend how a properly prepared feedback session facilitates student learning and performance improvement
- structure and plan a feedback session based on a given student scenario
Skills required to provide quality feedback
At the end of this talk, you should be able to:
- recognise the skills required for delivery of a quality feedback session
- structure and plan a feedback session based on a given student scenario
Visual illustrations of feedback delivery
This is a discussion session using videos to illustrate various feedback approaches
Recognising challenging students
At the end of this talk, you should be able to:
- recognise the stress/anxiety accompanying students during a clinical placement
- understand the student behaviour that is likely to predict a clinical placement failure
- be aware of the ‘Everything DiSC’ profile
- consider various approaches to support students to achieve optimal results
Managing challenging circumstances
At the end of this talk, you should be able to:
- recognise student behaviour that presents a challenge
- understand some strategies to resolve conflicts
- comprehend a step-by-step approach to initiate a conversation with students with challenging behaviour
- become acquainted with the concept of ‘failing to fail’ underperformed students
Managing challenging situations – visual illustrations
This is a discussion session using videos to illustrate various approaches to assist underperforming students
Case scenarios
This is a discussion session with workshop participants sharing challenging cases they have encountered
Post-WS test and evaluation
Workshop participants will be invited to complete a MCQ testing the understanding of the workshop principles and be asked to complete an evaluation questionnaire to provide feedback on the workshop.
